New Oxford Teacher Anthony Angelini Wins PA 2015-16 Milken Educator Award
As both a language arts and social studies instructor at New Oxford Middle School in New Oxford, Pennsylvania, Anthony Angelini weaves together literacy and history. His students, who range from at-risk to highly gifted, have shown consistent growth on summative assessments, and several have also won local Veterans of Foreign Wars awards for writing.
After naming Angelini Pennsylvania's 2015-16 Milken Educator Award recipient, Dr. Jane Foley, senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards, asked him what he wants his students to learn from social studies. Angelini responded with clarity and vision: "When we study [history], we look at a few remarkable people who have changed the world," he said. "We want our students to feel like they could be those people in our society...that they can make a big difference if they invest their passion and their urgency into it."
