Visiting dignitaries give third-grade teacher Masaru Uchino a hand with his oversized $25,000 Milken Educator Award check. Coincidentally, Complex Area Superintendent Rodney Luke (far right) is the son of retired Hawaii educator Walter Luke, who won the Milken Educator Award in 1994.

From left, Lowell Milken, chairman and co-founder of the Milken Family Foundation; Hawaii First Lady Dawn Amano-Ige; State Senator Michelle Kidani; recipient Masaru Uchino; State Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi; Governor David Y. Ige; Momilani Elementary School Principal Doreen Higa; and Complex Area Superintendent Rodney Luke.
