Back in Amanda Robertson's fourth-grade classroom, students tell Dr. Jane Foley, senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards, and Dr. June Atkinson, North Carolina's superintendent of public instruction, how they learn about math. Robertson has been a change agent for her school and district. When Mount Airy City Schools received a $1.6 million MAPSS (Math and Project-Based Learning for Student Success) grant, Robertson was one of three teachers in the first cohort to transform her instruction from teaching-centered to student-centered and implement project-based learning (PBL).
