Amanda Robertson acceptance speech

Still visibly surprised, fourth-grade teacher Amanda Robertson takes the microphone to address the assembly held in her honor at Jones Intermediate. Robertson is a proponent of the "flipped classroom" method of teaching, which Dr. Jane Foley, senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards, asks her to explain. Robertson makes short instructional videos which students watch at home; that way, Robertson can spend class time on problem-solving and application instead of lecturing. The flipped classroom also helps Robertson differentiate and individualize lessons, she adds, because those who understand the material can move on while she works with students who need more practice.
