Catherine Randall addresses assembly

With Louisiana Superintendent of Education John White looking on proudly, teacher Catherine Randall addresses the crowd gathered in the gym at Davies Elementary to witness her surprise Milken Educator Award notification. "You’re only as good as the team you’re a part of," she says, thanking the students, colleagues, administrators, and families in St. Bernard Parish.

Randall has been a member of the St. Bernard Parish community for more than a decade. In 2005, 10 days into her third year teaching in the district, Hurricane Katrina decimated Joseph J. Davies Elementary, most of St. Bernard Parish, and Randall’s own home. Though she lost both her job and her home overnight, Randall joined the district as soon as possible to help rebuild the school system from the ground up, working alongside colleagues who were teaching 50 or more students in classrooms housed in used trailers in a parking lot. Randall’s selfless dedication to students was an integral part of the school’s rebound after the natural disaster.
