In the rush of emotions and disbelief, Desi finds confirmation that this is really happening from the man who has guided and inspired him throughout his entire career: his mentor, Leon McKinley. When Desi was just starting out, McKinley, then principal at Mayberry Elementary in East Hartford, took a chance on the young teacher and has been his friend and mentor ever since.
McKinley's response to Desi's disbelief? "You deserve it."
