Texas Teacher Spotlighted Nationally as $25,000 Milken Educator Award Recipient … And It Was a Total Surprise!
Hutto ISD’s Olivia Joseph honored for exceptional work with kindergarteners at Howard Norman Elementary
April 07, 2026
SANTA MONICA, Calif. — As the sun rose this morning in The Lone Star State, Howard Norman Elementary School prepared for a special assembly with Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath – not yet knowing the life-changing surprise in store for the day. As excited students, staff, dignitaries, and media gathered for what they thought would be a ‘Leader in Me’ assembly, Commissioner Morath introduced an unexpected guest – who traveled from California – to honor one of the country’s top educators with a $25,000 Milken Educator Award.
When Milken Educator Awards Vice President Jennifer Fuller announced the recipient, the crowd went wild for kindergarten teacher Olivia Joseph, the state’s only 2025-26 honoree and the first from Hutto ISD. She is the 60th Texas recipient since the state joined the Milken Educator Awards program in 2000.
“Congratulations to Olivia Joseph for her exceptional work in building an educational foundation for her kindergarteners,” said Fuller, a 2017 Texas Milken Educator herself. “Olivia’s meticulous planning, innovative practices and caring nature prepare her students for the adventure of learning. Thank you, Olivia, and we look forward to amplifying your voice within the Milken Educator Network.”
Today Joseph joins a national network of over 3,000 Milken Educators spanning the Awards’ nearly 40-year history as the nation’s preeminent teacher-recognition program. Hailed as the “Oscars of Teaching,” the Awards initiative has no formal application or nomination process. Outstanding K-12 educators are sought out while early to mid-career for what they have achieved—and for the promise of what they will accomplish given the resources and opportunities afforded by the Award.
“Congratulations to Olivia Joseph on receiving the prestigious Milken Educator Award,” said Commissioner Morath. “As a kindergarten teacher, she inspires curiosity and builds confidence in her students, laying the foundation for lifelong learning. Her hard work and dedication to her students exemplify why great teachers deserve our respect and gratitude, and we are proud to celebrate her impact.”
This season reached more than $76 million in individual cash prizes since the Awards’ first presentation in 1987 and over $146 million invested in the Milken Educator Award national network overall, empowering recipients to broaden their impact and encouraging young, capable people to consider a career in education.
