Biographical Information

Ana Higuera, once a graduate of Lynwood High School in Lynwood, CA, went on to earn a degree from UCLA. She then came back to teach 9th through 12th grade history teacher at her alma mater. She went on to become Assistant Principal at Lynwood High School in 2015 and Principal in 2018. She is happy to give back to the community that gave her the tools for higher learning.

Higuera also served as the coordinator and an instructor in the Advanced Via Individual Determination (AVID) program, in which underachieving middle and high school students interested in college opt into a rigorous college-prep curriculum to get their education and grades on track for college. Ninety percent of students in the AVID program at Lynwood go on to college. As coordinator, Higuera built AVID participation up to some 400 in a given school year.

As coordinator, Higuera arranged three college tours and overnight stays for AVID students each year. Many of them have never seen a college campus before and will be the first in their families to attend. Since Higuera's AVID students have been so successful in gaining acceptance to colleges, many of her former students are often the tour guides for these trips. Just as Higuera has inspired them, this next generation of students passes the torch on to current students so that they, too, can achieve their goals.
