Dewey Gottlieb (HI '03) Named National Council of Teachers of Mathematics President-Elect

Dewey Gottlieb (HI '03), NAEP state coordinator at the Hawaii Department of Education, has been named the next president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), effective October 2025. Gottlieb has been a member of the board since 2020. According to his presidential candidate statement for NCTM, Gottlieb will be leading national efforts to reimagine high school mathematics through NCTM’s High School Mathematics Reimagined, Revitalized, and Relevant initiative, promoting equitable practices and meaningful learning experiences. A member of the University of Hawai‘i’s Ethnomathematics Program advisory board since 2013, Gottlieb helped establish the world’s first graduate-level ethnomathematics program. As former president of the Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics, Gottlieb brings a strong track record of collaborative leadership and systemic change. Now poised to lead as NCTM’s president, Gottlieb is committed to empowering teachers, addressing systemic barriers, and ensuring all students see themselves as capable learners.
