Barbara Dofka (WV ’96) passed away on July 4, 2026, at the age of 90. At the time of her Milken Educator Award, Dofka was a teacher at Weirton Heights Elementary School in Weirton, West Virginia, where she taught kindergarten through sixth grade and specialized in science, English, and language arts. A creative and dedicated educator, she developed a hands-on science and math program that encouraged students to explore learning alongside their parents and other members of their community. She also helped expand access to educational technology through the Ruralnet Training program, which worked to connect schools across West Virginia.

After retiring, Dofka continued supporting local schools through elementary science and math workshops. She is remembered for her lifelong commitment to education, as well as her love of writing, cooking, baking, reading, travel, and time spent with family and friends. Dofka was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Edward F. Dofka. She is survived by her son, daughter, three grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
