Memoriam All Memoriams
Nina Hawkins (MI ’06) passed away on February 1, 2026. At the time of her Milken Educator Award, Hawkins was a fifth grade teacher at Ralph Bunche Elementary School in Detroit, Michigan. A National Board Certified Teacher and data-driven instructor, she implemented innovative strategies that led to student achievement on state assessments. Passionate about connecting academics with real-world experiences, she organized and fundraised for an annual science camp, ensuring her students had opportunities to explore, discover, and grow beyond the classroom. In the classroom, Hawkins led a morning assembly showcasing student talent, school values and ethics lessons. She celebrated student success with everything from school supplies, extra gym periods, to Detroit Pistons games, and dinner at her own home.
A lifelong advocate for students and education, a scholarship is being established in her name through College Career & Beyond of Detroit to honor her enduring commitment to student success. Hawkins is survived by her husband, Craig Sims, and her mother, Gail Clark. Her legacy lives on through the countless lives that were enriched by her passion for teaching and love for all people.
