Biographical Information

She was a deeply reflective educator, teaching fifth-grade Nina Hawkins researched innovations in teaching and applied them in her classroom at Ralph Bunche Elementary School in Detroit. She frequently analyzed test scores and changed her teaching strategies to suit her students' needs. At the start of each day Ms. Hawkins led a morning assembly showcasing student talent, school values and ethics lessons. Each year she raised funds and organized a science camp combining outdoor living experiences with academics. She was a National Board Certified teacher. Ms. Hawkins helped ease the transition between fifth and sixth grade by taking her graduating students and their families on a tour of the local middle school. She often rewarded student success with everything from school supplies, extra gym periods, to Detroit Pistons games, and dinner at her own home. As a result of these and many other strategies, her students regularly exceled on state assessments. For Ms. Hawkins, teaching was clearly not just a job—it was a calling.
