Jim Manley (AZ ’00) passed away on February 3, 2026, at the age of 72. Born on November 10, 1953, in Kansas City, Missouri, Manley was known for his determination, curiosity, and deep dedication to his students throughout his career. At the time of his Milken Educator Award, he was a teacher at Stevenson Elementary School in Mesa, Arizona, where he inspired a love of science, conservation, and mathematics through his own enthusiasm for learning. Over a 40-year career, he taught in the Mesa School District at Jefferson, Stevenson, and Mendoza Elementary Schools, and at Northern Arizona University, where he founded the “There’s A Reason I’m A Teacher” conference to support and prepare future educators. His many professional honors included the Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and being named Arizona Teacher of the Year in 2000, reflecting his lasting impact on students and the teaching profession.

Manley had a lifelong passion for the outdoors and embraced opportunities to camp, bike, hike, and ski. Known for his curiosity, love of music, and signature tie-dye shirts, he brought joy and authenticity to all aspects of his life. He is survived by his beloved wife, Julie Kley, with whom he enjoyed bike touring across the country. Remembered for his adventurous spirit, commitment to education, and the meaningful connections he built with students and colleagues, Manley leaves behind a legacy that continues to inspire all who knew him.
