G. Gale Dickau (CT ’93) passed away on February 10, 2026, at 79 years old. At the time of her Milken Educator Award, Dickau was an English teacher at Bristol Central High School in Bristol, Connecticut, where she devoted 49 years to inspiring generations of students before retiring in 2017. A proud graduate of the University of Saint Joseph, she earned her bachelor’s degree in 1968 and her master’s degree in 1978, later receiving the university’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1994. Named Bristol Public Schools Teacher of the Year in 1992–1993, Dickau was widely recognized for her excellence in teaching and passion for creative writing. While teaching at Bristol Central High School, Dickau created and managed Signatures, a creative arts magazine for gifted students, writers, artists, and photographers. Dickau also turned the school library into an art gallery. Students and colleagues submitted 75 pieces of art, and student visitors created writing pieces inspired by the art. Following retirement, she continued serving students as Director and Writer-in-Residence of The Writing Initiative at Bristol Central High School, expanding opportunities in theater, workshops, scholarships, and literary enrichment while championing the power of student voice.

Dickau is survived by her daughter and son-in-law; two grandsons; two sisters; her niece; and her grand-nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; her parents; and her brother-in-law. A gifted storyteller with a quick wit and generous spirit, Dickau created a classroom filled with imagination, encouragement, and possibility. Whether traveling through Europe or sharing a homemade meal with family, she embraced life fully. Her legacy continues on in the countless students, colleagues, and loved ones who were inspired by her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to education.
