Louisiana Principal Chandler Smith Wins Milken Educator Award

When Chandler Smith, principal at Plaquemine High School, hears his name called as winner of a Louisiana Milken Educator Award for 2015-16, he is truly shocked. "Y'all really got me good on this one," he tells the crowd when Lowell Milken, chairman and co-founder of the Milken Family Foundation, hands him the microphone.

Smith is known as a data-driven educator who focuses intently on student achievement and what teachers should be doing to support it. "You've got to look at [students'] work to see if it's getting better," he says. "You've got to analyze where their difficulties are, where we can do better in instruction to move them further."
