It’s Such an Honor, Says Michelle Johnson, D.C.’s Milken Award Recipient

Second-grade teacher Michelle Johnson of Seaton Elementary School in Washington, D.C. was stunned when, during an assembly of students, colleagues, dignitaries and media, she heard her name announced by Interim State Superintendent Dr. Amy Maisterra. Later, Johnson told the swarm of reporters: “It’s such an honor. I come from a family of educators and I feel like I’m representing them, I’m representing my mom … representing all those other teachers who do hard work every day and don’t get recognition. This is for them, not just for me.” Also hear from Milken Family Foundation Co-Founder Mike Milken and veteran Milken Educator Kena Allison (DC ’13).

  • Welcome to the Milken Family. Your life is going to change immensely. This is equivalent to the Academy Awards for Teachers. It will be the best professional development ever. And the networking and sharing experience is wonderful. Congratulations!
