DC Principal Jessica Cunningham Surprised with $25,000 Milken Educator Award

It's hard to surprise the principal at a schoolwide assembly, but that's exactly what happened at KIPP DC College Preparatory. Watch as Milken Family Foundation Chairman and Co-Founder Lowell Milken presents Principal Jessica Cunningham with the Milken Educator Award and a $25,000 check, with help from DC State Superintendent of Education Hanseul Kang, KIPP DC Founder and CEO Susan Schaeffler, and veteran Milken Educators. After Cunningham recovers from her shock, she shares the strategy for high achievement she works to instill in her students. "So many amazing things in life are possible if you work hard and focus and make really smart decisions—and attach yourself to really great people," she says.

  • Kudos and congratulations! I am a proud (new) parent of a kindergartner at KIPP DC Promise Academy and am excited at the educational programming KIPP has to offer. Mr. Milken was absolutely right, teachers are often overlooked for a job well done. I look forward to a long relationship with KIPP DC and hope to meet Ms. Cunningham in the process.

    Best wishes!

  • It is indeed a pleasure to know that the educators are being recognized. I have two grand children in Kipp DC and I have been pleased with their progress. I worked for an government agency that provided educational services to military dependent children and I at one time thought that DC did not put a lot of effort to our children, now I am more involved and I know that we do have good educators and they are putting that extra effort to educate our children. I say to you, THANK YOU FOR BEING AN EXCELLENT EDUCATOR
