Alabama's New Milken Educator Is Amara Alexander

Michael Sentance, Alabama's superintendent of education, has stopped in at Horizon Elementary to talk to the students about their achievement at an all-school assembly. But he's got a surprise guest waiting in the wings: Dr. Jane Foley, senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards, who presents sixth-grade science teacher Amara Alexander with Alabama's 2016-17 Milken Educator Award and a $25,000 cash prize. • Amara, we are sooooo proud of you that we can't find enough words to tell you. We knew before you were even born that God was creating a special human being and he did just that. You know we love you with all our heart and is so proud to call you daughter. Willie told his friends that you won USA Teacher of the Year. I corrected him but to him you did. Big Smile. Don't stop now. The sky's the limit! Love you baby and Congratulations!!!!!

  • How do you spell teacher extraordinaire? A-M-A-R-A A-L-E-X-A-N-D-E-R! I am so proud at how God is using you to bless and impact the lives of students. Kudos! The long hours at work to prepare engaging and fun lessons paid off (obviously) in more ways than one. :-) Isn't it amazing that following the teachings of Christ is true? ...And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do ALL in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him (Colossians 3:17). He is certainly a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. Won't the Lord do it?!! CONGRATULATIONS!!

  • Congratulations, Amara! Being selected for this award is a wonderful accomplishment. Teachers are often major influences to their students, and I appreciate you for being the best teacher you can be. Also, as a STEM major, I admire the fact that you teach science! I am proud to say I attend the university you received your degree from, Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical University. You are a great example of "start here go anywhere".
