Trick AND Treat, Katherine Bobby—You're a Milken Educator!

 

 

Still reeling with emotion, Milken Educator Award recipient Katherine Bobby says a few words at her surprise notification as Dr. Jane Foley, senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards, looks on with pride. "I thought the best thing that was going to happen this week was the 50% [sale on] Halloween candy at Walmart tomorrow," says Bobby, drawing giggles from the crowd. Then she tells the assembly about the poster that hangs behind her desk, which she made when she first started teaching. "It's a candle, and it says 'Remember those who light no candles have no right to curse the darkness.' That's not for students ... that's for myself." The candle is a reminder, she says, to recognize and celebrate the bright spots and successes as they appear.
