North Carolina educator Shane Henderson is a proud product of the Chatham County community and a first-generation college graduate who has dedicated his career to giving back to the community that shaped him. A graduate of Chatham Central High School in Bear Creek, Henderson now teaches fourth grade at Pittsboro Elementary School. His career journey from school bus driver to instructional assistant, classroom teacher and teacher leader has shaped the belief that guides his work: every child deserves a champion, an adult who believes in them, builds meaningful connections and refuses to give up on them.
Over more than a decade in education, Henderson has become a beloved presence at Pittsboro Elementary, where his students celebrate his birthday like a national holiday. He combines strong relationships with high expectations, using student data to guide instruction, monitor progress and provide targeted support. His impact is reflected in measurable results. During the 2025–2026 school year, students in his homeroom increased overall Math EOG proficiency by 28 percentage points, from 45% to 73%, and overall Reading EOG proficiency by 28 percentage points, from 36% to 64%. His commitment to student growth was also recognized through a 3rd–5th Grade Teacher Reading Performance Bonus based on 2024–2025 EVAAS growth results, ranking him among the top 25% statewide and within his district for Reading growth in his respective grade level.
Henderson believes academic success begins with connection. He works closely with students, families and colleagues to set goals, communicate progress and create a classroom where students feel known, valued and challenged to reach their potential. His leadership now extends beyond his classroom as Pittsboro Elementary’s Beginning Teacher Coordinator. He leads the Beginning Teacher Program, coaches educators in their first years of teaching, provides instructional support and facilitates monthly professional learning. Through this work, he helps create a culture where educators feel supported and empowered to grow.
Throughout his career, Henderson has embraced opportunities to serve his school community. He has served as a first-grade grade-level chair, participated on the School Improvement Team and behavior team, led a running club and continues to support the Breakfast for Brainiacs club. He also maintains his commercial driver’s license, driving activity buses for fourth-grade field trips and stepping in to drive regular bus routes when needed. For Henderson, leadership means being willing to do whatever is needed to support students and colleagues.
His commitment to professional learning has also taken him beyond Pittsboro Elementary. As a first-grade teacher, he presented at the National School Boards Association’s Conference for Public Education Leaders on his LETRS learning and how he applied evidence-based literacy practices in his classroom.
Henderson earned a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts with a concentration in Sociology from Southern New Hampshire University in 2016 and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in December 2025. As the first person in his immediate family to attend college for both his undergraduate and graduate education, his journey reflects the transformative power of opportunity and perseverance.
From driving a school bus in the community where he grew up to teaching its children and now supporting its educators, Henderson’s career has remained rooted in service. He continues to believe that the greatest impact an educator can have is helping others see what is possible for themselves.
