Nancy Varian is director for professional development for Malone University's School of Education in Canton. Previously, Varian served as principal of Magnolia Elementary School in Magnolia and Sand Valley Local in Magnolia. In 1999, she traveled to Japan as a Fulbright Memorial Fellow, and also received her National Board Certification. As a former teacher at East Canton Elementary School in East Canton, Varian was a strong proponent of having children learn by "constructing" knowledge. She secured grants and other resources through which she purchased radon kits, model rocket kits, books and audio-visual materials. A science specialist, Varian also organized "star-gazing" activities and other expeditions and field trips. Her third-grade students dubbed themselves the environmental "Good Earth Guys," creating songs, raps and skits to educate younger students about the duties of responsible citizens. Varian's students tested their homes for radon, made compost heaps and raised money to adopt endangered animals at area zoos. In 1994, Mrs. Varian received a Christa McAuliffe Fellowship awarded by the U.S. Department of Education.
