Biographical Information

Under Jacqueline Austin's leadership, John F. Kennedy Montessori Elementary School in Louisville became the first public school in Kentucky to adopt the Montessori teaching method. When Mrs. Austin became principal in 1990, she launched the school on a path of major reforms that resulted in improved student academic performance, higher attendance rates and increased parental involvement. By implementing the School-To-Work program that included an actual school post office, a school bank and financial services office, and a school TV station, she created a career awareness program that helped students acquire a foundation in real-world activities and practices. In response to the needs of her community, Mrs. Austin expanded school services to include G.E.D. adult education classes, an in-school counseling program and a Family Resource Center.

In retirement, Mrs. Austin continues to stay well connected and involved with current education issues, both locally, regionally and nationally. She mentors aspiring educators and administrators and serves as a valuable resource to parents and guardians. She serves as the chairperson of several scholarship committees and is a weekly Bible Study Teacher for youth in her church.
