Dr. Richard Lindgren (CT ’88) passed away peacefully at his home in Sarasota, Florida, on February 12, 2026, at the age of 90. At the time of his Milken Educator Award, Lindgren was principal of Illing Junior High School in Manchester, Connecticut, where he served for 20 years. Under his leadership, Illing was recognized with a National Blue Ribbon School in 1983, and Lindgren was honored at a White House ceremony.

A lifelong educator and mentor, Lindgren earned a Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut and dedicated more than 50 years to preparing and inspiring educators as an adjunct professor at Central Connecticut State University and later the University of South Florida. He enhanced his career through active involvement in professional organizations, such as the National Association of Secondary School Principals (now the NPA), and expanded his impact through educational leadership work throughout the U.S. and around the world. Lindgren is remembered for his commitment to learning, leadership, and service, as well as his love of family, the outdoors, golf, and travel. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Diane; five children; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
