Marian Lacey (AR '97), a teacher and administrator for the Little Rock School District, has passed away at the age of 76.

During her 32 years in the Little Rock district, Marian taught English at Dunbar Junior High School, served as assistant principal at Central High School, and returned to Dunbar as the principal. She spent 10 years as principal of Horace Mann Arts and Science Magnet Junior High School, where she was named a Milken Educator in 1997. Marian then served as the district's assistant superintendent of secondary schools. After Marian retired in 2005, the Little Rock School District instituted the Marian G. Lacey Teacher of the Year Award, which is presented to a teacher in the district each year.

  • I was sad to discover the passing of my past boss at my first teaching job at Horace Mann Junior High in 1996, while visiting CALS downtown. I saw her photo while working with a student who is doing a National History Day project. In 1996, I was a German teacher from Dover and I commuted from there to Little Rock everyday. I was so impressed with Ms. Lacey. She had a presence about her that commanded respect from the students in the hallway. Soft spoken with strong thoughts is how I would describe her. I had always planned to try to get in touch with her again but I always seemed to have many other things going on in my my life. I returned to LR schools in 2012 and I actually used her hand written review of my teaching while under her leadership, which held quite a bit of weight in helping me land that job. She was a woman that I was proud to have known and her positive impressions remain with me to this day. May God Bless her family and grant her quick entrance into Heaven. With fond memories, Lisa Kay Vorwerk (now Sabir), German Teacher from 1996-1998 Mann Magnet Junior High; Current Teacher at Cloverdale Middle School
