In November 2019, Gaylon Garner (IL '88) died at age 75. At the time of her Milken Award, Gaylon taught kindergarten at Ralph H. Metcalfe Community Academy in Chicago.
I'm devastated to learn that Gaylor has died. She was one of the first to receive the Milken Award; I met her when I received my award in 1992. Many of us from Illinois shared good times, especially at the Milken and/or state conferences. (when both were in vogue). She had an indomitable spirit and an infectious personality. My only regret is that I lost contact with her ~ and a few good others. Patricia Walker

Mrs. Garner was a phenomenal teacher that set the tone for many foundations. I am forever indebted to her passion for teaching and the time she spent with me and my family in and out of class.
