Dr. Carol Jo Coe (WA '95) passed away on October 15, 2025, at 78, due to pancreatic cancer. Born in Chicago and raised in Seattle, Carol graduated with Tyee High School’s inaugural class in 1965 and went on to earned her degree in speech, magna cum laude, from the University of Washington, where she was among the first women to compete in the Senior Men’s Debate Division. A lifelong educator, she taught for nearly 50 years, founding innovative programs such as ENCORE, Students and Teachers Against Racism, and Visions, a school-within-a-school for nontraditional learners. 

Carol later served as director of social studies for the Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, helping to revitalize civic education across the state. She earned a master’s in sociology and psychology from Pacific Lutheran University, and a Ph.D. in education from University of Washington, after retirement. Carol and her husband of 56 years, Mike Coe, shared a deep love of travel, culture, and family, spending cherished time with their grandchildren. Remembered for her brilliance, generosity, and adventurous spirit, Dr. Coe’s legacy lives on in the students and communities she so passionately inspired.
