Knoxville 2017 Lowell Milken addresses assembly West High

The surprise guest is Lowell Milken, chairman and co-founder of the Milken Family Foundation. He tells the students that teachers have the most important job in the country: preparing all of them to succeed in the world. Only education, he says, can help them get high-skill, high-salary jobs. "You're only in high school once," he says. "Make the most of it." Teachers, he adds, aren't recognized often enough for their hard, important work. He created the Milken Educator Awards three decades ago to recognize our most outstanding educators—and this year, one of those educators is right here in Knoxville.
