Newly minted Milken Educator Lindsay Murray and Dr. Jane Foley, senior vice president of the Milken Educator Awards, talk with Murray's fourth-grade students in her classroom. Whether for enrichment or remediation, Murray's instruction is customized for each child's needs—important in a school where mainstreamed special education students make up about 16% of the population. Cundiff students are high performers: Students surpass state SOL (Standards of Learning) in both math and reading, with Murray's students scoring 10-15% higher than school averages. Still, Murray makes it clear that she considers test scores only one indicator of success.
