California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond congratulates students and staff on their success during this year's return to in-person instruction. He shares some of the obstacles he encountered as a child after his mother died. Education was always a priority: "Life will be better than where you started because of education," his family told him. Like the events of his childhood, the superintendent says, the pandemic was beyond our control, but thanks to the dedication of teachers and families, students have thrived.

Then, unexpectedly, Superintendent Thurmond introduces another guest—someone who has come to share a secret.
