At Oneonta Elementary School in Oneonta, 4th Grade Science teacher Ramona Brewer's innovative instruction reaches well beyond the classroom walls. She has served as a teacher instructor for AMSTI (Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative) for the past three years. She has made technology an integrated and dynamic part of the curriculum and uses a hands on, investigative approach to teaching Science. Mrs. Brewer, who received National Board Certification in 1999 and has recertified twice, has served as a scorer for Alabama Teacher of the Year, an Alabama Blue Ribbon selection panelist, and a board member of the Regional Inservice Center through Athens State University. She has served as president of the local chapter of the state teachers' union and as a mentor to other teachers in the district. Mrs. Brewer retired this year after 31 years at Oneonta Elementary. She is currently employed part-time with the Blount-Oneonta Chamber of Commerce and serves on the board of several local non-profits including OFFER (Oneonta Foundation for Educational Resources.)
