Lara Bryant Cabaniss says she feels privileged to be the curriculum coordinator at Fred L. Wilson Elementary School in Kannapolis - a small school of 325 students in grades K-5 - because she gets to know each of her students. Mrs. Cabaniss develops reading skills using Thinking Maps, a technique of creating visual "maps" of thought processes. Her students then convert these Thinking Maps into sentences and paragraphs through a sequential writing program called Writing from the Beginning. Mrs. Cabaniss is an expert at researching best practices and training fellow teachers in these practices. She has been instrumental in bringing parents into the educational process through monthly Family Nights, which typically draw as many as 200 people. She also plans and organizes Wilson's after-school tutoring program and conducts an annual summer reading program involving a neighborhood bookmobile.
