Biographical Information

At Park City High School in Park City, Spanish teacher Gerry Maak helped lead the development of a nationally recognized Advanced Placement Spanish program using dramatic performance, classroom decoration and other instructional strategies to create a unique cultural environment. An advocate for the needs of non-English and limited-English speaking students, Ms. Maak recently used federal grant money to create a world civilization course taught entirely in Spanish for either Spanish or social studies credit. She is an important leader in district policy, having helped develop the district's ESL program, and acts as a liaison between the Latino community and various community agencies. Ms. Maak initiated the formation of a state committee to reduce barriers for Latino residents and has worked with legislators to improve access to higher education for children of undocumented immigrants.
