Biographical Information

Dr. Vaughn G. Rhudy currently serves as the Director of Assessment at the West Virginia Department of Education. His duties include overseeing West Virginia's statewide assessment system. He previously served as the Reading/Language Arts and Online Writing Assessment Coordinator and Smarter Balanced Assessment K-12 Lead. Before coming to the West Virginia Department of Education in 2008, Dr. Rhudy previously taught English and journalism at Shady Spring High School in Shady Spring, WV, where he created innovative educational activities to keep students engaged. A former award-winning newspaper reporter and editor, Dr. Rhudy established the school's journalism program and advised the national award-winning student newspaper, The Tiger Times, as well as the school's yearbook. He developed a pre- Advanced Placement English curriculum and watched his students excel in the annual statewide writing assessment, which is part of the state's assessment program he now oversees on the state level.
