Assistant Principal Dr. Raye Lynn White has strengthened curriculum, instruction and community engagement at San Antonio's East Central Heritage Middle School. In the "Reach for the Stars" initiative, which enlisted community resources to boost student achievement on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS), Dr. White provided test preparation materials and tutor training to social service organizations and churches, and organized a competitive mock test to reduce student test anxiety. She has facilitated teacher workshops to improve classroom management and promote the use of alternative assessment. A lead biology teacher at her former school, Judson High School, Dr. White was responsible for developing technology-integrated science curricula and interdisciplinary programs. Judson High School's science program was enriched through her participation in the Urban Systemic Initiative in math and science, and it was named a model USI school.
