Biographical Information

Cari Kojima is a resource teacher for first graders in the Reading Intervention Program at Kealakehe Elementary School in Kailua-Kona. The Reading Intervention Program is an early intervention literacy program designed to provide first graders with daily thirty-minute lessons in reading and writing. Mrs. Kojima, who adapted and implemented the program for the school, points out its success in teaching young students the skills necessary to correct and improve their performance. She has also facilitated the program's implementation at the kindergarten level and is currently working on its expansion into a school-wide program. Teachers at other schools in Western Hawaii have benefitted from her guidance in implementing the program, and she believes that her participation in a consortium among schools will make the program widely available throughout the school system.
