Brenda Crane, physical education and health teacher for Tyrone Elementary School in Harper Woods, has developed an award-winning physical education program that incorporates community service and character education. Her "Jump Rope for Heart" program engages students in physical activity while raising money for the American Heart Association and teaching the importance of giving. She assists other teachers in integrating physical education into their daily curriculum, and is regularly visited by education students as a model of best practices. Mrs. Crane has worked to develop state guidelines for developing and assessing an early-elementary physical education program, and is currently spearheading an effort to develop elementary-level guidance counseling and career development in the district.
I have taken a leadership role on our District School Improvement team and am passionate about two things: creating a climate in our schools that is healthy and helping the classroom teacher to use data more readily to aid in student improvement.
