Based on an outstanding Teacher of the Year nomination package completed by two of her students, Porter was named Harford County Public Schools Teacher of the Year in 2001-2002, and was one of seven semi-finalists for Maryland State Teacher of the Year. While working as a mentor teacher, Porter began working on a new Maryland State Department of Education initiative, The MSDE Comic Book Initiative, a partnership with Diamond Comic Book Distributors and Disney Comics. As a Milken Educator, Porter has been instrumental in gaining support from state legislators on a variety of school initiatives and has received additional support from the region's state senator for continued funding of an afterschool program. State legislators often visit the schools in which Porter works and legislators have even taught lessons.
