Milken Educators of Rhode Island
Our Vision
To cultivate a sustainable, highly supported, and thriving educator workforce in Rhode Island by connecting early-career teachers with a network of recognized Milken Educators. We envision a Rhode Island where every new teacher enters the classroom with confidence, feels deeply supported through dedicated mentorship, and remains inspired to grow and lead within the profession.
Our Mission
As a cohort of recognized Milken Educator Award recipients across diverse grade levels and subject areas, our mission is to uplift teacher candidates and early-career educators across the state. By bridging higher education residency with real-world classroom practice, we aim to combat educator burnout, strengthen teacher retention, and champion excellence in Rhode Island schools.
Early Launch & University Partnerships
- University-to-Classroom Pipeline: Partner directly with higher education institutions like the University of Rhode Island and Roger Williams University to support student teachers and residents before they step into their first full-time role.
- Practical Readiness: Provide targeted guidance on job applications, interview strategies, digital portfolio development, and professional expectations.
Continuous Mentorship & Community
- Responsive Drop-In Support: Offer ongoing drop-in sessions, hotlines, and advice panels (such as “Ask Milly Milken”) to tackle real-time classroom challenges, school culture navigation, and job search troubleshooting.
- Peer-to-Peer Connection: Create safe spaces where new teachers can bring real classroom hurdles, explore solution-oriented strategies, and feel valued as colleagues.
Retention & Educator Empowerment
- Burnout Reduction: Address early-career isolation and exhaustion by “pouring into” new teachers with practical resources, classroom library donations, and moral support.
- Leadership & Growth: Inspire new teachers to see a long-term future in Rhode Island education by modeling career longevity, adaptability, and leadership.
Goals
Expand University Partnerships: Scale the URI residency model to establish regular touchpoints with teacher preparation programs statewide.
Build a Mentor Network: Match early-career teachers in Rhode Island with Milken Educator mentors by grade level and discipline for one-on-one and small-group support.
Resource Distribution: Provide tangible classroom supports, such as book donations for first-year classroom libraries and practical instructional toolkits.
