Laura Servin Becomes 2015-16 Milken Educator for Texas

Laura Servin (TX '15)   |   Whittier Middle School  |  San Antonio, TX  |  Feb 18, 2016

It's a big day for Whittier Middle School and the San Antonio Independent School District: Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Education Commissioner Mike Morath are visiting to commend students and staff on the school's academic achievements. But then Morath introduces Dr. Gary Stark, chief executive officer for the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching and a 2001 Milken Educator from Arkansas. Representing the Milken Family Foundation, Stark tells the assembly that one Whittier Middle teacher is about to receive a national award and a large cash prize. Stark turns it over to Abbott, who announces math teacher Laura Servin as the winner of the 2015-16 Milken Educator Award for Texas, making this a day Servin will never forget. Servin is not only the sole recipient from Texas this season, but is also the first from her district. Follow the morning's exciting events in the photos below.
