Vaughn A. Martin teaches Math and Science to students in grade five at Caribou Community School in Caribou, Maine. A believer in hands-on instruction, he has his students create videos, role-play concepts, cook, build with Legos,, create games, construct models and perform experiments. He organizes frequent field trips to the nearby science center, and the Gulf of Maine Research Institute. As chair of the science curriculum team, Mr. Martin is leading his team to move from a textbook-driven program with one that is inquiry-based and hands-on.He also organizes STEM science family nights and science buddies with lower grades to present hands-on activities. He speaks in area schools on Family Science nights and STEM teaching. Mr. Martin was honored with a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 1997. He is also honored on the University of Southern Maine Wall of Fame.
