Vaughn A. Martin teaches science to students in grades four through six at Easton Elementary School in Easton. A believer in hands-on instruction, he has his students create videos, role-play concepts, cook, build with Legos, make quilts, create games, construct models and perform experiments. He organizes frequent field trips to the nearby science center, the state capitol and Boston, Massachusetts. As chair of the science curriculum team, Mr. Martin led the replacement of a textbook-driven program with one that is inquiry-based and hands-on. He is a team leader for the Maine Assessment Portfolio Project, a state task force creating science tasks and rubrics aligned with the Maine Learning Results and the National Science Standards. Mr. Martin was honored with a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 1997.
