Biographical Information

Currently Tracy Lee is on the Executive Board of The Foundation of Rock Hill Schools. After retiring from teaching, Ms. Lee began evaluating teacher grant applications for The Foundation, then was invited to join the board as a member of the Grant Committee. She later was nominated to join the Executive Board as Nominating Director, seeking out and inviting key members of the community to bring their skills to The Foundation. She has served as an adjunct professor at Winthrop University after retirement teaching a course in diverse families.

When Tracy Lee was teaching her first-grade classroom at Oakdale Elementary School in Rock Hill, activity and integrated learning went hand-in-hand. Her students built counting skills by doing jumping jacks and transforming the books they read into musical and dramatic performances. Throughout the years, Ms. Lee compiled a video record of each student's progress, which she shared with parents. She was the sponsor of the school's award-winning environmental club and conducted a monthly math game show called "Dazzling Dragons." A National Board Certified teacher, Mrs. Lee offered staff development workshops on a variety of subjects, including inquiry-based science learning and math manipulatives. She mentored new and pre-service teachers, and was active in developing local, state and national curriculum and standards.

In her last year of teaching, Ms. Lee wrote a grant and created a walk-in Butterfly Pavilion in her classroom where students created a butterfly habitat and raised caterpillars into butterflies. Students and visitors enjoyed being in the Butterfly Pavilion where they observed all stages of the life of a butterfly from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis, then to butterflies flying around them. From this experience, the York County Museum asked Ms. Lee to create a Butterfly Porch on the screened in porch of their facility. This was a summer long program where all members of the community were invited into the Butterfly Porch to feed butterflies, observe the life cycle, and just enjoy the awe of the beauty of butterflies. Tracy Lee served as an adjunct professor for Winthrop University teaching science education, math education and STEM education.

Tracy earned her B.A. in Elementary Education (1987) and two Master's Degrees in Reading Education and Pre-Elementary/Early Childhood Education (1993) from Winthrop University. She has been National Board-Certified Teacher since 1999.
