Toni Lockhart, a master teacher at Rena Elementary School in Van Buren, has the distinction of being the first Arkansas teacher ever to obtain National Board Certification. A specialist in standards-based education, Lockhart aligned the technology-based Lightspan program with the state's curriculum frameworks and assessments. As a trainer in the state's Early Language and Literacy for Arkansas (ELLA) program, she models exemplary teaching practices for the school's K-2 teachers. In addition to offering workshops and presentations on curriculum integration and family literacy, Lockhart serves on a state panel charged with designing a mentoring program for licensure. She also mentors teachers engaged in the National Board Certification process.
