Terri Kay Pike was the founder and owner of a successful bridal and gift store when she decided to pursue her original career goal: to become a teacher. An expert practitioner and trainer in the balanced literacy approach, Mrs. Pike works to meet the individual needs of all of her third-grade students at Dyersburg Intermediate School in Dyersburg. Combining shared and guided reading, Writer's Workshop, literature circles and collaborative planning, Mrs. Pike helps students develop a comprehensive set of language arts skills. She also applies Reading Recovery strategies to help struggling students read at their grade level. As a member of the Dyersburg Intermediate School Leadership Team, Mrs. Pike works with administrators, parents, community leaders and teachers to discuss and make recommendations for educational improvements. She frequently trains other teachers in the balanced literacy approach.
