Stanley Miller, principal of Starkville High School in Starkville, eschews traditional methods of academic scheduling, allowing his students to learn at their own pace. The four-by-four modified block schedule that Dr. Miller has implemented has not only increased the number of classes that students are able to take each year, it allows them to more quickly "retake" a course in which they are having difficulty. He has also extended the school day to provide time for tutorial help or make-up work. Dr. Miller has also created a program for ninth-grade students called Learning Strategies to help ease the famously challenging transition from middle to high school.
