Patricia Mack, principal at Walker Middle School in Salem, aims to be a leader who is both well-informed about and plays an active role in the restructuring efforts in Oregon's education system. Recognized as the Associated Oregon Industries Outstanding Middle Level Principal for 1991 and Oregon Secondary Principal of the Year for 1992, Ms. Mack's goal is to provide a safe and nurturing learning environment for her students. "I am an educator," she says, "because I believe I can -and do- have an impact on development of the knowledge, skills and values that our young people need to have in order to be successful in today's complex and ever-changing society." In 1989, Walker Middle School was recognized by the United States Department of Education as a National School of Excellence.
