The students in Patricia Bown's science classes not only learn about science; they experience it. Ms. Bown, science teacher at Silver Hills Elementary School in Kearns, has planned and directed the development of an outdoor nature classroom around her school's retention pond, giving her students a chance to come into direct contact with the plants and animals they are studying. Ms. Bown has also developed a functioning space simulator, which her students built, gathered parts for, and maintain. To keep the simulator operating, Ms. Bown has raised funds through several business partnerships and often brings in her own equipment. Ms. Bown's colleagues have also benefited from her knowledge through faculty inservice classes on physics, chemistry, astronomy and computers.
