Biographical Information

As music education coordinator for the State of Minnesota, Nyssa Brown works to improve K–12 education for all Minnesota students and educators through innovative programs and partnerships centered in the arts. Brown facilitates professional development, curriculum, and assessment practices statewide. Previously, Brown created the music program at Park Spanish Immersion Elementary School in St. Louis Park. Based on the principles of Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály, Brown's program instills a love of music among her students while employing a sequential method for teaching the principles and technique of music. Initially designed as a program for kindergarten through second grade, the program has grown to include students through the sixth grade. Brown even invites families and people from the community to sing at the school's winter and spring concerts. Her music program works in tandem with the school's immersion language learning model. Brown is a mentor for pre-service teachers, leads the school's specialist team and is a member of several school committees. She also directs the sixth-grade choir.
