Biographical Information

Nancy J. Harman retired as Principal of Kathryn O’Loughlin McCarthy Elementary in 2015.  A specialist in science instruction, she has facilitated numerous science workshops for educators at the university level, and was an early advocate of the use of technology as a tool for finding solutions to real- world problems. Her innovative teaching strategies have included a collaboration with an art teacher in which she turned her classroom into a simulated rain forest. Harman also engaged her students in a Milken Festival for Youth project writing monthly letters to grandparents and local senior citizens, and published the letters in their own personalized “memory books." Harman serves on the district curriculum committee. In addition to being National Board Certified, she has received several prestigious honors, including the National Science Foundation's 1997 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and the Governor's 2000 Teaching Excellence Award.
