Principal Mary McAfee's focus at Zuni Elementary Magnet School in Albuquerque is always on the children. To occupy their time after school with meaningful activities, Ms. McAfee created and runs the Zuni After-school Program (ZAP), which now serves almost half of the student body. The program provides physical and recreational activities as well as a variety of mini-classes in subjects ranging from the arts and music to science and mathematics. She motivates children to read through the Principal's Reading Club and Book Exchange Program, which rewards frequent readers with books to take home. Ms. McAfee has helped teachers develop more quality programs for their students by instituting a series of weekly staff development mini-workshops.
