Biographical Information

Mary Bernadette Curtiss taught English literature at Trumbull High School for 35 years. There she not only exposed her students to great authors, she also worked to instill in them a sense of the social and cultural awareness needed to take on responsibilities of adulthood. Beyond the classroom, Ms. Curtiss made herself available at home on selected weeknights so students and parents could phone her with questions or comments. During the summer, she led student trips to the annual Shakespeare Festival in Oregon. In 1990 she received the "Thanks to Teachers" Award and the Mahatma Gandhi Peace Award for the CEA, and, in 1987 and 1989, grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities.
